About this tool

The three formulas are: X% of Y = X / 100 × Y; X is what percent of Y = X / Y × 100; and percentage change = (new − old) / old × 100.

A common mistake is mixing up the base. A price that rises from 80 to 100 has gone up by 25%, but a price that falls from 100 to 80 has gone down by 20%, because the change is measured against the starting number each time.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a discount?

Use the first calculator: 20% of 1500 gives the discount amount. Subtract it from the price to get the final price.

Why is the increase 25% but the decrease 20%?

Percentage change is always measured against the starting value. Going from 80 to 100 is +20 on a base of 80 (25%), while 100 to 80 is -20 on a base of 100 (20%).

Can I use decimals or negative numbers?

Yes, decimals work. For percentage change the starting number cannot be zero.
